From Spin Bike to Life Lessons: Don’t Dim Someone Else’s Light

So, it’s Saturday morning and I’ve just finished my own version of spin class. Yep - you read that right. I snuck into the empty studio, popped in my headphones, cranked up my playlist and pedalled like I was in my very own private nightclub on wheels. And you know what? It was pretty damn good.

I don’t know why this never occurred to me before - it’s such a simple idea, but it’s kind of transformed my spin experience. How did it happen? A few weeks ago, I was the only one signed up for a class. Instead of cancelling, they put on a virtual session. Normally, I’m not a fan of virtual classes, but that one actually worked. And afterward, I thought… what if I just bring my own music? Boom - instant upgrade.

Now, I do it all the time. Most days, I have the room completely to myself - which is perfect. Occasionally one or two people wander in, but the virtual class is loud enough that I can still blast my playlist through my headphones without bothering anyone. Either way, I’m vibing. (Although yes - I definitely need more spin playlists.)

This morning, while pedalling to Magnetic Man - you know, the track I Need Air (I don’t know any of their other songs) - I had a thought. A couple of people had complained about someone in class for being…hmm… how to put it… ‘too enthusiastic, too loud.’

And I was surprised. This person wasn’t doing anything wrong. In fact, their energy is uplifting and positive. Sure, maybe it’s not for everyone - but asking someone to tone it down? That’s basically dimming their light. Complaining about them is… well, pretty much pissing on their parade.

Look, I get it - some classes just won’t have the right vibe for you, for whatever reason. Maybe it’s a bit cliquey, maybe the music isn’t your thing, maybe the instructor’s energy doesn’t resonate - or something else entirely. But that’s where your choice comes in: step away from what doesn’t serve you. You don’t need to dim anyone else’s light. Let people be who they are. Let them take up space. Let them share their energy. If they’re not hurting anyone, isn’t it just better to let them be?

And if the vibe isn’t for you? Simple - stick to classes that feel right for you, or hop on a spin bike solo. With the perfect playlist and a freestyle routine, it becomes your own little adventure. No one to kill your vibe - just you, the music, and pure imagination land.

So yeah - spin lesson of the day:
👉 Don’t dim someone else’s light. If it’s not for you, ride your own ride.

Random thought #2 💡 Do you ever have that weird ‘situationship’ with someone - where you’re not close friends, but you thought you got along… and then suddenly you think, wait, do they hate me? Yep, they hate me. And the next minute, they’re smiling and saying hi? Like… what? Either hate me consistently or be friendly consistently. This emotional ping-pong is exhausting. Come on - choose a lane and stick to it.

And finally, random thought #3 💡 (aka ‘getting older’): At a certain age, you honestly can’t tell if you’re sick… or just old. We went to France for my mum’s 70th, and everyone caught some bug. I was having night sweats and felt pretty wiped out… but I couldn’t tell if it was the bug - or just perimenopause. 🥴

After 40, moving your head the wrong way can feel like a full-blown injury. Sudden movements are dangerous - they can take you out for days.

For me, seeing more people struggle with health as we get older really puts life into perspective. I’ve become much more aware of death, but in a strange way, it’s motivating. Like - why not take risks in life. Why not take that business risk that may or may not work out? We’re all on borrowed time anyway. It also makes me more intentional about moving my body, eating well, and appreciating that I can still hop on a spin bike and pedal off into my own little world.

So there you have it: a Saturday morning spin, three random thoughts, and maybe too much oversharing. You’re very welcome. 😎
