Why Giving Matters More Than You Think - And It’s Not Just About Money

woman writing thank you note

You’re probably wondering where all my Saturday money posts disappeared to.

Or, let’s be real - you probably forgot Saturdays were ever about money posts. It’s been a while. I started out so strong though, didn’t I? Every Saturday, dropping something useful (hopefully!). Something to help you feel a bit more confident with money - or at least understand it better. Or, at the very least, trying to untangle the logic behind Trump’s tariffs (that one gave me a genuine headache).

But lately? Instead of helpful money tips, I’ve been posting about... life. About how much caffeine one human can consume before vibrating into another dimension. Riveting stuff, I know.

I have a quick confession: since trying that energy drink, I’ve had, um... four more. I know, I know - they’re bad. But there’s this one at my corner shop - Reign Storm - and it’s kind of addictive. It’s marketed as “clean energy,” plant-based caffeine and all that. I mean, who knows how “clean” it really is, but it launches me into another dimension - and I sort of like it.

Anyway, enough about my caffeine addiction.

Let’s talk about the money posts.

Yes - they’re coming back. Promise.

Because I really do want to help you with your money. I know I keep saying it, but honestly - it’s not as scary or complicated as people make it out to be. It’s totally doable. Trust me, I’ve got you.

Look, I know money isn’t everything, but it is important. I want to help you build enough savings to walk away from a job you don’t like, leave a toxic environment, go on that adventure you’ve been dreaming of - or simply start living life on your own terms. And to do that, you need the freedom money can bring.

That said… this post isn’t about money either. Well, kind of... very loosely.

This one’s more of a ramble (what can I say - I like to ramble). A little reflection. Some things I’ve been learning - and unlearning. Stuff I’ve come to believe is true. Not just in theory, but in real life.

I like to think of myself as a generous person (yes, I know how that sounds). Not in a flashy, grand-gesture kind of way - but in the small, everyday stuff. I try to give - money, time, support. Not because I’ve got loads to spare (I really don’t), but because of what happens when you give.

And no, I don’t mean getting something in return from the person you gave to. It’s not transactional. In fact, it’s rarely the person you gave something to who gives something back.

I genuinely believe that when you give - freely, generously, without expectation - it comes back to you.

In small, unexpected, random ways.

And recently, here’s what I’ve noticed (yes, this is me sharing my unsolicited wisdom - you’re welcome):

When you’re stuck in your own head, that flow? It stops.

You stop seeing people - not like "should’ve gone to Specsavers" seeing - I mean really seeing them. You know what I mean. You stop noticing. You stop giving. You quietly shut down - just a little - even if you don’t realise it.

That was me for a while. I got stuck in my own head. You know the feeling - life gets lifey, and your emotions just check out. Yeah, that. I was closed off. Not really seeing people. Not giving much of anything, really.

And you know why - of course you do. I keep banging on about it. Yep, I was clinging to the hot stove. Too caught up in the burn to see clearly, blinded by the pain and frustration of it all. I know, I keep using that metaphor - but hey, repetition is good, right? I mean, you remember it. You might be wondering if I’m capable of coming up with a different metaphor - one that I haven’t borrowed from someone else.

Challenge accepted.

Here’s one: Driving a lorry through a hurricane. Okay, I might’ve used it once before - maybe twice - but it still counts, right? I’ll probably find out it’s a common phrase I subconsciously picked up somewhere and tried to claim as my own.

If life feels like that - like you’re driving a lorry through a hurricane - your brain has zero capacity for anything else. You’re gripping so tightly to the wheel, doing everything you can just to keep the thing on the road. You don’t have time to notice anything around you. You don’t have the energy. You’re just focused on making sure you don't crash.

But now? I’m starting to open back up. I feel lighter. Less stressed, less exhausted, and not so weighed down by thoughts that had no business hanging around in my head in the first place.

And I want to stay open. Because small gestures matter.

A retirement gift.
A birthday message.
A text that simply says, “Hey, I see you. I appreciate you.”

These little things are back on my radar. And honestly? It feels really good to give. I’m sure there’s some science behind that - there has to be. Dopamine? Oxytocin? Something that sounds all fancy and scientific. Mel Robbins probably knows. (Mel, if you're reading this, blink twice and send a podcast.)

Because in the middle of our busy, overstretched lives, taking a moment to see someone - whether it’s a win, a milestone, or just their existence - it means something. You know it does.

And how do I know?

Because I’ve been on the receiving end recently:

Like when my accountant quietly reduced her fees, without a word.

Or when my boys’ school gave them full PE kits - and wouldn’t take a penny.

Or when someone messaged me, completely out of the blue, just to say thank you.

Those little things? Yeah they made me smile. They mattered. They made a difference.

They reminded me how powerful even the smallest gestures can be.

So yes - the money posts will be back.

But for today?

This is the kind of wealth I’m thinking about. 🩷
