Why Loosening Your Grip Can Change Your Life

I know today is meant to be a money post... but umm... it isn't. I will do one early next week. I will. Just... not today.

This week has been one of those weeks that feels really busy. I suppose that's life though, isn't it? It's been the end of the school year, so there's been school performances, wandering around shops trying to find half decent teacher gifts and cards, the early school pick up on Wednesday, followed by a trip to the park with the boys, my friend and her daughter (who's in Flynn's class), to celebrate the end of term. Except it wasn't just the end of another school year. It was the end of junior school. In September they'll be starting senior school, which feels slightly surreal if I'm honest.

By Friday evening I was exhausted, but I'm really glad I made time for all of it. Sitting in the audience at their school performance, watching them laughing with their friend at the park, celebrating the end of such a big chapter in their lives. Those moments matter to me far more than another email or another job ticked off my list, and I know I'll never get them back.

I think that's something I've become much more aware of over the last few years. Life will always be busy. There will always be another email to answer, another job to finish, more work to do or another task to tick off the list. If we wait until life calms down before making time for the people and moments that matter, we'll probably be waiting forever. We have to choose those moments. We have to make time for them, because otherwise life can become one long to do list and before you know it, you've been living on autopilot without really paying attention to what actually makes life feel fulfilling.

I've become so much better at living intentionally. It's happened gradually, but I'm much more aware now of where my time and energy go. Yes, you have to be selective because if you give your energy to everything and everyone, eventually you'll have none left. But equally, I want to spend it on the people I care about, the things I value and the experiences that actually matter to me. I think that's become much clearer because I don't spend as much time trapped in my own head anymore. Instead of constantly listening to every thought that pops into my mind, I've learnt to slow down and actually listen to myself instead.

I genuinely think our thoughts can stop us living the life we really want if we believe every single one of them. For years I assumed that because I thought something, and it made me feel a certain way, it must be true. Thoughts can be incredibly convincing, can't they? I listened to every worry, every fear and every prediction my mind came up with, without ever questioning whether any of it was actually true. Looking back now, I can see that most of it was just noise. The more I've learnt to let those thoughts come and go without treating them as facts, the lighter life has become. I'm much more in tune with myself now because I'm no longer listening to the constant chatter in my head. Instead, I'm listening to something much quieter, and much wiser.

It's also helped me realise something else. Some things are meant to be part of your life and some things aren't. Some people stay, some people leave. Some opportunities work out and others don't. And that's okay. I once heard someone describe it like holding a balloon, and I thought it was a really good way of looking at life. We grip things so tightly. People. Relationships. Expectations. The future. Even old versions of ourselves. We hold on because we're terrified of losing them, terrified of what might happen if they disappear.

But what if we loosened our grip? Not let go completely. Just loosened it.

Because if something is meant to be part of your life, it will be. And if it isn't, maybe it was never supposed to stay forever. Holding on so tightly only creates anxiety. It leaves no room for life to unfold in ways we could never have planned. Sometimes we're so busy trying to control everything that we stop allowing new opportunities, new people and unexpected moments to enter our lives. We also make it much harder to let go of the things that were never meant to stay in the first place.

More and more, I'm learning to trust myself. To trust that whatever life throws at me, I'll know what to do when I get there. To slow down instead of speeding up. To listen to something much quieter than all the noise inside my head. And the more I do that, the lighter everything feels. And the more life opens up.

So yes, this week was busy. Really busy. But it reminded me that no matter how full life becomes, I'll never regret making time for the moments that matter most. The emails can wait. The washing can wait. The work will still be there tomorrow. But watching your children celebrate the end of junior school? You only get that once.

Life doesn't need us to hold on tighter. It just needs us to loosen our grip and trust ourselves.đź©·
