How Small Decisions Can Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways

Life has a strange way of weaving moments together that, at the time, feel completely random. A quick scroll on your phone, a decision made at the last minute, a small conversation you barely think twice about, and yet months or years later, you realise those tiny moments quietly changed the direction of your life.

I was talking to Jessie recently, and we ended up chatting about how we first met. The story itself is simple, but the timing of it feels kind of amazing when I look back. Back in 2024, I saw an Instagram story from someone I knew about a retreat Jessie was hosting in London. Normally I probably would’ve just gone onto the next story, but at that point in my life I’d been completely wrapped up in work and had started to feel this nudge that I needed to say yes to more things outside of it. More experiences, more people, more life. So when I saw it, something in me just thought, yeah… I’ll go to that. It felt spontaneous, almost random, just one of those moments where you follow a feeling without overthinking it.

Looking back now, the timing feels almost strange in the best way. These days I barely go on Instagram. If I’d opened the app ten minutes earlier or later, maybe I would've missed the story entirely. If I hadn’t already been feeling that urge to do something different, maybe I would've ignored it. But I didn’t. I went to the retreat. I met Jessie. And fast forward to today, she’s coaching me one-on-one. The impact that’s had on my life is hard to put into words. The shifts I’ve experienced, the clarity I’ve gained, the energy I feel moving forward, it all traces back to that one small moment of curiosity.

What’s interesting is how that same pattern keeps showing up in different ways. It's Sunday afternoon and earlier I went for brunch with a friend. She's going to be joining my business, which I’m really excited about. At one point we were joking about what it would be like if she turned into the employee from hell, and without even thinking I said, “I’d probably just pay for a therapist for you.” It was completely a throwaway comment, but driving home afterwards I suddenly thought… that’s actually a really good idea. Having that kind of support available for well-being and mental clarity is powerful, and it's something I can genuinely see becoming part of what I offer in my business.

Everything just seems to be falling into place. Jessie is about to launch a new course, and recently I’ve become friends with someone who works in the same place as me. We met again for coffee on Friday, and while I was thinking about the course, it suddenly clicked that she would probably be open to trying it with me, maybe even more than anyone else I know. I haven’t asked her yet, but since it’s an online course, I think doing it together would make it much easier for both of us to actually stick with it. And once I’ve experienced it myself, I’ll have a much clearer sense of how it can really help other people.

When I step back, it’s kind of uncanny, in the best way, how it all lines up. Meeting Jessie, her creating something I can use, me connecting with someone who I think would genuinely benefit from it, and the idea of building something meaningful into my business… none of it was planned, but somehow it all fits.

Even the smaller, slightly ridiculous moments seem to follow the same theme. The other day I had one of those bursts of energy where I just couldn’t sit still. I’d already had a PT session that morning, but by lunchtime I still felt restless, so I went out for a quick walk that very quickly turned into more of a walk-run. Before I left, I realised my earbud case wouldn’t fit in my pocket, so I handed it to reception to keep safe. When I came back, the receptionist looked at it and said it was strange, because someone had handed in an identical case months earlier after finding it in the car park. Same model, same everything, and somehow, months later, it had ended up back in my hands. So now, slightly bizarrely, I have two identical earbud cases.

It’s such a small thing, but it made me smile because it felt like another one of those moments you couldn’t have planned if you tried. A random Instagram story leads to meeting someone who ends up having a huge impact on your life, a joke turns into a genuine business idea, a new friendship aligns perfectly with something you’re about to explore, and even a lost item finds its way back to you in the most unexpected way. When you step back and really look at it, you start to realise how much of life is built from these tiny, seemingly insignificant moments that eventually connect in ways you could never predict.

Maybe the real takeaway is just to stay open. Open to the random Instagram story, open to saying yes to something new, open to the idea that small moments might actually matter more than we give them credit for. Because sometimes the things that change your life don’t start with a big, carefully planned decision, they start with something much simpler. Yeah… I’ll go to that. 🩷
